MONICA PANDIAN

Monica Pandian

Hi, I’m Monica Pandian, an intuitive watercolour artist based in beautiful Victoria, on Vancouver Island. I’ve always been drawn to the whimsy and wonder of the natural world, and my paintings often celebrate that — from delicate florals and botanicals to playful animals and whimsical creatures. My hope is that anyone who sees my work feels joy, reconnects with their inner child, and experiences a moment of happiness.

I’m entirely self-taught. Painting came to me naturally, and I’ve followed my intuition ever since. Watercolour fascinates me — I love how the pigments flow and blend, allowing the medium to guide me while I act as its interpreter. Creating art feels like breathing; it’s meditative, healing, and a way to celebrate life’s beauty.

My background is in Plant Biology and Biotechnology (BSc, Women’s Christian College, Chennai) and Ecology and Environmental Science (MSc, Pondicherry University). Studying plants and ecosystems shaped how I see the world and inspired me to translate that understanding into my paintings. It’s a way to share both the science and the magic of nature.

Sustainability and care are central to my practice. I always choose handmade, non-toxic watercolours with the ACMI AP (Approved Product) Seal, ensuring materials are safe and crafted with care. My first experimental sets were made from soil, plants, and natural materials, capturing the colours of nature in their purest form. For my professional works, I use DANIEL SMITH Artist Materials Extra Fine™ Watercolor colors, so my paintings last and carry the energy and intention I put into each piece.

Some of my small original artworks are available locally at Fika, the cozy coffee shop on Cook Street and Johnson Street here in Victoria. It’s wonderful to share my work with the community and see it brighten everyday spaces.

For me, painting isn’t just making art — it’s observing, feeling, and connecting. It’s a way to celebrate nature, nurture curiosity, and share happiness. I invite you to step into my world, explore the stories in my work, and perhaps rediscover the joy of seeing the world with wonder.

We gratefully acknowledge that we currently live, play, and work on the unceded traditional territory of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples, known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. We honor and respect the rich history, cultural heritage, and ongoing contributions of the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations. We are committed to learning, listening, and standing in solidarity with these Nations as we continue our operations on this sacred land. We also express our gratitude to the Old Growth Trees that once stood strong, supporting the livelihood of humans and animals, before being sacrificed to create space for our present-day operations. We are privileged to inherit the genetic gifts from our elders who protected our culture, revered nature, and harnessed the benefits of biodiversity and forest.
